Natural Food Cures: Coconut Oil
There have been much controversy over coconut oil. It was not too long ago when the medical
community pointed to a link between saturated fat and heart disease. Coconut oil was shunned as a result. However, more recently, research showed that the fatty acids found in coconut oils are actually medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), unlike long chain fatty acids found in other plant sources. As a result of the new findings, coconut oil is now gaining popularity as a oil that has many health benefits due to its MCFAs.
It is best to use Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as it is the freshest press of the oil before any other chemical processes or used to refine it further. It is easy to find VCO sold everywhere in specialty cooking or health stores.
VCO has amazing antibacterial and anti microbial properties. Where bacteria nowadays appear to be more resistant to conventional medical drugs, VCO can come in handy as a treatment.
Coconut oil is also used by the Indians as a skin conditioner. It also helps to lower cholesterol levels. This flies in the face of the current establishment who have been puzzled over clinical trial results of this miraculous saturated fat.
VCO is best taken orally. You can take it straight or use it as a salad dressing. Others also use VCO as a primary coconut oil. The best way to incorporate it into your diet is a gradual process while decreasing your dependence on polyunsaturated oils. You will need to ensure that you are not allergic to VCO, before adding it to your diet.
I have also found the VCO to be wonderful in easing constipation. A tablespoon or two appears to work wonders when I feel bloated, or after a “heaty” meal.
